AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Through the theme of the prison, the teaching will accompany the student to know some of the main currents and the greatest authors of Polish literature from the second half of the nineteenth century to the present day AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The aim of this course is to present students with an overall overview of Polish literature from the second half of the nineteenth century to today, using the theme of the prison as a leitmotif. Prison is what, in the words of Marshal Pilsudski, “for a long time was part of the Polish culture”,”a life partner of the Poles”. As is well known, even after the 1920s, period of the Father of the Fatherland’s declaration, jail and imprisonment continued to mark the life of this country and of numerous Polish writers and leaders. The students will learn to read an important literary tradition from a decentralized point of view, and to evaluate how the phenomenon of the always very current detention of writers and intellectuals, and the complex relationship between inside and outside, between freedom and constraint, is one of the constants of cultural life in a general sense. An essential introduction to the theme will be the international conference “From Behind the Bars: Art, Literature and Prison from the XIX Century to Today”, organized by the DCLM on December 5th and 6th, 2018. At the end of the course, students will be asked to be aware of the different historical and literary periodizations of Poland from the late nineteenth century to today; to know how to place events and authors chronologically; to be able to analyze one of the literary texts on which one will dwell in the course of teaching. Exam Board LAURA QUERCIOLI (President) KAROLINA KOWALCZE LESSONS LESSONS START Second semester Class schedule POLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE II EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION examination, during which the student will answer a question on a topic at his/her choice, will comment on one or more topics studied in-depth during the lessons and will demonstrate a good general knowledge of the major literary movements as shown in the History of Literature in Bibliography ASSESSMENT METHODS The student will demonstrate to have assimilated the program, to be able to elaborate a brief discourse both on the subject at choice and on those requested and to comment on the texts studied during the semester, placing them in the Polish and European historical and cultural context. Attendance and active participation in classes will not only facilitate the examination path but will also be assessed in the final score.
