OVERVIEW

The course is an introduction to the Human Geography aas a discipline dedicated to the study of the transformations of the ecumene determined by the action of cultures, values, aesthetics, political and social structures and economic dynamics.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student will have acquired the basic knowledge and skills of the Human Geography. In particular: the relations between political, social, territorial organization and landscape, the nowledge of kdemographic dynamics and their relations with development processes.

 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at introducing students to the themes of the Human Geography,a discpline essential for understanding and critically tackling crucial aspects of the current processes of territorialization: from the global climate change to the migratory phenomena and the changes in international relations. At the end of the course the student will know: the nature of the main concepts and tools of the geographical analysis: the notions of space and place, spatial and territorial diffusion and interaction, the main features of the geographical maps and the main forms of interaction between human societies and the environment, including the processes of urbanization and the international migratory movements. At the end of the course the student will be able to use the tools studied to understand and interpret the main lines of the current and past territorialization processes, the history of the distribution of the world population and of its becoming in time and space, the movements of the migrants and their connections with environmental, economic, social and cultural factors. To this, the student first of all must memorize a set of notions and definitions that are indispensable for identifying, describing and analyzing geographical phenomena.

TEACHING METHODS

The leectures will be in Italian. 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Common part for courses of 6 and 9 CFU - Nature, characteristics and objectives of human geography. The concepts of space, territory, environment and landscape. Ecosystems and natural, renewable and non-renewable resources. The relationships between environment, society and territory. The basic concepts of population geography: distribution and density of the world population, fertility, mortality, life expectancy and infant mortality. The migrations: nature, motivations, spatial distribution and the management of the phenomenon. The cultural identities, human languages ​​and religions. The relationship between culture and territorialization. The economic and political organization of the terrestrial space. The Geography of development. The Geography of agriculture. The geography of flows and networks. The geographical analysis of the urban phenomenon. The Political geography.
Special part for the 9 CFU course - Introduction to a geographical analysis of the dynamics and challenges that are played in the Mediterranean area: the Mediterranean as a "labyrinth", the Euro-Mediterranean relations, from the Arab springs to the present migratory crisis, the new territoriality resulting from migrations.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will be written, exclusively in Italian (also for non-Italian speaking students).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The examination will be aimed at verifying: the knowledge of the topics covered in class and shown in the texts suggested in the bibliography; the ability of the student to establish correlations and analyze and discuss case studies.
The final mark will be function of: 80% of disciplinary knowledge and 20% of the argumentative capacity and fairness of the exposition
