OVERVIEW

The Industrial Project represents the operative phase of a process of engineering that originates from the idea of a product and which ends with its realization. The design phases follow certain rules and in their development specific methodologies and terminologies are applied. The student in Science  of the materials commonly interacts, in the professional field, with the engineering world and it is opportune that he knows how to interact with the processes that guide the industrial project.

The module is proposed as a basis for industrial design issues and is linked with the basic knowledge of physics, chemistry, science and technology of materials. Alongside a methodology of industrial design, the student is oriented towards the development of elementary mechanical design procedures.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the teaching of Foundations of Industrial Project is to provide basic elements on industrial design issues, linking them with the basic knowledge of physics, chemistry, science and technology of materials. Alongside a methodology of industrial design, the student is oriented towards the development of elementary mechanical design procedures.

At the end of the course the student will have acquired the basic knowledge for the interpretation of a mechanical industrial project. Specifically, the student will be able to:

  • evaluate simple drawings of an industrial project
  • justify the main design choices
  • identify the problems, of a physical nature and related to the selection and processing of materials, associated with simple mechanical industrial projects
  • draw up simple graphic project drawings according to the rules of conventional representation

PREREQUISITES

No specific prerequisites are required, without prejudice to the basic knowledge of general physics and inorganic chemistry.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching consists of lectures, supplemented with exercises and examples, guidance for a total 48 hours at which are added 12 hours dedicated to the entering of projects, related to the sub-simple mechanical systems, which are developed by the students organized into groups (usually two students for each proposed project). 
 In the project development is required the realization of construction drawings of components, prepared with CAD codes support. The project is a fundamental part of the exam.
Attendance at lessons is not mandatory, while drafting the project is mandatory.
 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The module proposes a first level of interconnection between disciplines of industrial engineering and disciplines of chemistry and physics. It is organized as follows:

  • Basic elements for an engineering approach to design problems.
  • Interactions between design, model and design of components, sub-systems and industrial systems.
  • Reading and interpretation of drawings and technical drawings.
  • Elements of industrial design.
  • Elements of functional mechanics.
  • Operating principles of technological devices for industrial use.
  • Requirements and functional needs of machine and plant organs.
  • Criteria and procedures for choosing large-scale unified components.
  • Choice of construction materials and interactions with the project.
  • Construction procedures and foundations on technological processes

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam includes an oral exam. The project work carried out by the student is taken as reference. The student must be able to discuss his / her work by justifying and commenting on the proposed design choices. Starting from the contents of this document, two further questions will be formulated to the student on topics included in the lectures.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will verify the effective acquisition of basic knowledge on the interpretation of a simple industrial project. The student must be able to discuss the issues addressed during the course and to correlate them to the specific subject matter of the project developed by the student himself.
