Along side this evolution and the languages formed on this basis, the initial forms of literature born from these languages are studied (especially French, Spanish and Italian). Thus, literature from the middle ages that promoted new types of invention and expression (for example novels about King Arthur) will be studied. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to analyse notions relating to the origin, structure and evolution of Romance literature (especially Italian but also French and Spanish). These notions refer to the articulation and history of Romance literature in relation to narrative culture and forms that were configured in Western Europe between the 12th and 14th centuries by transferring narrative materials often from far away origins in terms of time and space (Latin texts, especially Ovid’s “The Metamorphosis”, oriental texts from India or Persia mediated by Byzantium, ‘Breton’ texts from Welsh chronicles), to the western short story, from the “Lais” in langue d’oil to the Italian novella in the 14th and 15th centuries. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to give students the widest and clearest possible panorama of the formation of languages that originated from the common Latin matrix and the literature written in these languages over the centuries of their formation. More specifically, the course proposes illustrating the network of fruitful encounters, contacts and relations among different Romance areas as well as with nearby cultural contexts especially in Germanic and oriental areas. TEACHING METHODS The programme for the Romance Philology course takes place during the first semester (between October and December). It will be divided into three weekly lessons of two hours each and will be integrated with material - sometimes visual - that will be introduced on aula web (students must register for aulaweb). The exam has a written part consisting of a brief essay illustrating notions relating to the third part of the course which revolves around Courtly literature in France and Italy in the centuries between the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance.
