AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides the basic elements of transportation systems and road infrastructure, coupling theoretical and practical concepts, often through real-world case studies.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student has acquired the elements to set up and solve simple problems of analysis and planning of interventions in a transport system, with particular reference to road infrastructures. The laboratory exercises introduce the student to the simulation of transport systems, and increase his practical capabilities. Seminars by experts in the sector and guided visits complete the student's preparation by creating an interface with the outside world and collocating the learned topics in the professional framework.

TEACHING METHODS

Classes, exercises, seminars, and guided visits.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  • DEFINITION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS: structures, transport supply and demand for mobility.
    Socio-economic and territorial features.
Basic models of transport demand and supply, and traffic assignment.
    Optimization and decision-making.
  • STRATEGIES AND POLICIES OF INTERVENTION ON TRANSPORT SYSTEMS: definitions and classification.
Interventions on land use, on transport supply/demand elements.
Interactions between land using and transport systems.
  • ELEMENTS FOR THE DESIGN OF TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS: infrastructure, vehicles, transport services, users, rules, and regulations.
The planning decision-making process. Design levels.
Evaluation of interventions: economic analysis, financial analysis, detection and prediction of both internal and external impacts, comparison of design alternatives.
  • ELEMENTS OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION: design elements of the geometry of the infrastructure, their inclusion in the community, construction, management, and safety.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of a written test, which can be completed by an optional oral test.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The student assessment includes a written test in which questions are proposed to show the learning of the topics covered in class, possibly completed by an optional oral test. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired understanding and knowledge of the basic concepts of transport system engineering, and therefore be able to set simple problems of analysis and planning of interventions.
