OVERVIEW

The course is composed of a theoretical module and practical exercises in interlinguistic written and oral mediation.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student will have acquired knowledge and competences in the field of French linguistics, multilingual terminology, Italian-French translation, and will have explored specific aspects of these domains, including LSP such as economics, law and technical/scientific languages. This will be also possible thanks to courses, held by professional in the field of written and oral mediation and by native speakers of French, aimed at the practical acquisition of French and of interlinguistic mediation at a specialized level, and thanks to an interpreting module where base techniques of dialogic interpreting will be practiced.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Theoretical module: at the end of the course students will be able to:

  • know the theoretical basis of audiovisual translation;
  • technically create subtitles;
  • create a text for subtitling;
  • reflect in a critical way and auto-evaluate their translation practice.

Practical exercises: at the end of the course, student will have acquired specialized competences in the fields of oral and written interlinguistic mediation.

PREREQUISITES

First Year

Students will have C1 language competence in French. Practical and theoretical knowledge in the field of translation is hoped for.

Second Year

Students will be allowed to sit the theoretical module for the 2nd year only after succeeding in the theoretical module of the 3rd year. SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will focus on the translation for audiovisual supports, which belong to the larger domain of plurisemiotic translation. General characteristics of this medium will be analyzed and practical exercises in translation will be carried out, taking into account different genres.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The theoretical module exam will test the competences that students will have acquired in the field of plurisemiotic translation. The paper which they will have to submit at the end of the course will consist in a commented translation of a few pages, while the interview will evaluate the students’ ability to reflect on their own translation practice.

The practical exercises will consist in base specialized translation (technical and scientific translation, law translation, economics translation, text revision) and interpreting (sight translation, consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Theoretical module: it aims at assessing competences acquired by students in the field of plurisemiotic translation. The portfolio to be presented at the end of the course will consist in the commented subtitling of an audiovisual sequence, while the oral discussion will aim at assessing the students’ capacity to reflect on their translation practices.

Practical exercises: specialized translation (technical, scientific and text revision, or law and economics translation) and interpreting (sight translation, consecutive, simultaneous).
