CODE 65037 ACADEMIC YEAR 2018/2019 CREDITS 12 cfu anno 2 TRADUZIONE E INTERPRETARIATO 8743 (LM-94) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR L-LIN/12 LANGUAGE English TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER Annual TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW Lingua e traduzione inglese II is made up of four parts: a theoretical part (modulo teorico) and three practical parts (lettorati). The lettorati deal with technical and scientific translation, juridical translation and interpreting. The information below concerns the theoretical part. AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES This course aims at providing students with specialised competence in English linguistics and translation both from a theoretical and a practical point of view. It also aims to look at various text typologies and their characteristics and to promote critical awareness of the translating strategies and linguistic tools identified during the course. TEACHING METHODS 30 hours (3 hours over 10 weeks) to be held mainly in class and, to a lesser extent, through distance learning. Active participation on the part of students is required. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Theoretical module, Prof. Ilaria Rizzato Real texts, especially narrative texts as well as academic and popularising essays, are translated from English into Italian by students. Their translations provide the basis for discussion in class and the opportunity to comment on the translation and revision practices most commonly in use and on issues of translation quality. Information on practical modules Interpreting, Dr. Luisa Bertolotto The "Dummy Booth" experience Four years ago this University signed an agreement with the leading conference centre in Genoa Porto Antico di Genova - Centro Congressi www.centrocongressigenova.it http://www.centrocongressigenova.it/spazi/ to offer students the opportunity to practise interpreting in a real-life setting During the first of this two-year course, a 2-hour curricular lesson is spent at the Conference Centre with the Interpreting Professor to familiarise with the Centre, the booth and the code of conduct. Students in turns go inside the booth and interpret. The conference topic has already been prepared during the previous lesson in the language lab where videos on that specific subject had been interpreted. A feedback is reported during the subsequent lesson. After this initial lesson at the Conference Centre students start going to the different congresses autonomously, in pairs usually for half a day. All conferences attended by students in the course of these 2 years are always previously prepared in the language lab with the professor, so this work is both curricular and extracurricular. Our partners /sponsors: Porto Antico di Genova - Centro Congressi , Teknocongress that always provides the console in the booth. The whole activity is free of charge. The 'BIDULE' experience at GeMUN Every year trainee interpreters practise interpreting using the 'bidule', a portable interpretation system. GeMUN stands for Genoa Model United Nations, an organisation that advances understanding of the United Nations, all organised by students, recreating the different UN Commissions. Trainee interpreters have the opportunity to practise both simultaneous and consecutive interpreting during this conference and to learn the terminology as well as debate and voting procedures used at the UN. Every year a different topic is discussed by the different commissions. Both the topic and the terminology used during the works are prepared previously in the language lab. This work is both curricular and extracurricular. Interpreting at University Conferences In the course of years trainee interpreters had the opportunity to practise both simultaneous and consecutive interpreting at small conferences organised by the University of Genoa (Business, Architecture, Foreign Languages, etc). An important experience to learn how to approach and train for an interpreting service. All conferences attended by students in the course of these 2 years are always previously prepared in the language lab with the professor, so this work is both curricular and extracurricular. Juridical Translation, Dr. Justin Rainey The LM94 courses in legal and economic translation aimed at providing students with a sound theoretical background in the areas of law and economics in addition to simulation of professional translation engagements and the meeting of market standards (quality, punctuality). Technical and Scientific Translation, Dr. Susan Campbell The course focuses on the special challenges inherent in translating expert-to-expert technical and scientific material such as scientific publications, advanced textbooks and medical manuals for doctors. In each lesson students bring an excerpt they translated and we discuss the strategies and tactics they should avail themselves of in order to overcome the difficulties they encountered. As a translator myself, I am able to teach them how to glean information from clients that will help to improve accuracy. Students get practice in finding online materials that can help them understand the source text well enough to provide an accurate translation. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY References will be announced during the course. TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD ILARIA RIZZATO Ricevimento: See Ilaria Rizzato's personal page.
