OVERVIEW

The course is a 12-credits-course consisting of

- a theoretical module (30 hours) in which the main theoretical aspects of translation are presented and illustrated;

- an applied module (40 hours): German-Italian and Italian-German translation of legal texts;

- an applied module  (40 hours): German-Italian and Italian-German translation of economic texts;

- an applied module  (40 hours): basic skills of German-Italian and Italian-German simultaneous and consecutive interpreting.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course seeks to provide students with specialist knowledge and skills in German linguistics and translation and to delve into individual aspects, including sector-specific languages such as economics and business. It provides for the support of courses, held by translators, interpreters and assistants, native speakers of German and Italian, aimed at practical learning of the language and of interlinguistic mediation at the specialist level, and of an interpreting module in which basic techniques of dialogic interpretation.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student shall be able to obtain:

- the linguistic-textual skills for the analysis of German texts, oriented at translation into Italian;
- an adequate critical awareness of the ‘complexity’ of the translation phenomenon
- awareness of specific translation problems arising both from the differences between the two language systems and from the different text conventions and cultural traditions.

PREREQUISITES

Good linguistic mastery of written and spoken German, and equally good linguistic mastery of written and spoken Italian, together with good skills in expression, are assumed.

TEACHING METHODS

The theory module will be provided as traditional lessons, with the professor teaching the whole class.

The application modules will be provided as exercises.

Lessons will be held mostly in Italian.

During the lessons, constant feedback with the students is expected through verbal questions. The degree of maturity of the answers, their relevance and the use of adequate sector-specific terms will be considered for the outcome of the final test.

It will be the professor’s responsibility to provide the students, in each instance, with photocopies related to the documents studied during lessons and to prepare lecture notes at the end of the course.

A copy of the lecture notes will be filed at the Department Library.

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS:

Non-attending students shall present the programmed specified above, with the above cited critical literature and with the addition of the following textbook:

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Theory module: written test (40% of final mark)

Application modules: written / oral test (average of marks of lectorship tests: 60% of final mark)

ASSESSMENT METHODS

For the theory module, learning assessment entails a written test.

Knowledge related to the course will be assessed via:

1)    Yes-and-no questions, for which the student shall demonstrate knowledge of the main cultural foundations (literary, historical, geographical, political) related to the German world.

Constant updating on the part of the student on current German political topics (by reading newspapers, listening to TV and radio newscasts) is ‘welcome’.

2) Open-ended questions in which the student shall demonstrate knowledge of concepts related to the topic of the course.

The skills achieved by the student shall be evaluated through targeted exercises, in which the student shall demonstrate the ability to apply the tools provided during the lessons.

Criteria for assigning the final mark:

. skill in debate and summarisation.

. syntactically correct writing and use of the specific terminology of odeporic literature

. capability to organise written text with clarity of thought

Translation exercises entail written final tests and interpreting exercises entail a final test.
