OVERVIEW

12 ECTS course consisting of a Theoretical Module, Consecutive Interpreting, Technical Translation and Translation Revision and Proofreading. 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides students with the tools for metalinguistic analysis, with a special focus on specialized texts, in order to enhance students' translation and interpreting skills between Italian and Spanish. 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at providing students with sound knowledge and skills in order to understand the theoretical and practical basis of translation and interpreting. The following will be dealt: technical and scientific translation, translation revision and proofreading tecniques (including Machine Translation pre and post editing), sight translation, mediation and consecutive interpreting. The theoretical module aims at dealing with some challenges of community interpreting, in particular in healthcare settings.

Specific aims:

To get knowledge and train skills relating with translation and interpreting from both a theoretical and practical point of view, joining research perspectives and professional standards.

To get adequate techniques and tools in order to cope with a specialised translation and interpreting assignment.

To develop skills in order to self-assess and apply a reflexive approach in complex situations.

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • identify and solve translation problems in a strategic and effective manner, also taking into account as many contextual and situational variables as possible for each assignment;
  • apply knowledge, techniques and tools learnt in a functional and useful way according to the communicative situation and context;
  • autonomously organise and also to network with other colleagues in order to apply his/her competences in a cooperative and transversal way.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures and interpreting/translation practice, including team work.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The theoretical module will deal with community interpreting, in particular in healthcare settings.

The practical modules will consist of tecnichal translation, revision and interpreting assingnments and tasks.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The technical and scientific translation module will be assessed at the end of the course by carrying out a remote translation assignment. The same for the translation revision and proofreading assignment at the end of the module which will also be carried out remotely. The interpreting module will be assessed at the end of the course and is composed of two parts: consecutive interpreting es-it (approximately 3 minutes) and it-es .

The theoretical module will be assessed by asking students to write a paper in Spanish (approximately 1300 words) which will go deeper into a specific topic among the ones dealt with during the course. 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The following will be assessed: adequacy, functionality, accuracy, and reliability. Both contents and the general approach (i.e. paralinguistic and non verbal communication in the case of interpreting) will be assessed.

For the Theoretical Module, the following parameters will be taken into account: adequacy and accuracy of the Spanish language used and the competence and skill to critically review the bibliography read and studied.
