OVERVIEW

Through this course of Scientific English, students will develop specific language skills that will enable them to overcome the barrier of the English language and access international scientific literature, not only for their own professional development, but also to implement evidence-based practice to improve patient and healthcare outcomes.

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

Know the basic English grammar. Recognize the specific healthcare terminology. Apply the rules of English grammar and specific terminology within their own professional sector. Critically appraise the contents of a scientific article in English. Distinguish the particular meaning of medical-scientific English terminology from common English. Describe analytically the contents of a medical-scientific text. Explain the contents of a scientific article in English.

The purpose of this course is to:

- teach students the basics of English grammar (Level B2)

- provide students with a correct understanding of medical-scientific terminology.

- introduce the issues related to the particular meaning of medical-scientific terms.

- enable students to correctly interpret the contents of a scientific article.

- develop students’ ability to stay updated on today’s rapidly-evolving scientific advances by being able to read and understanding international scientific publications in English.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Apply the rules of English grammar and specific terminology within their professional context.

• Recognize the specific terminology of the healthcare and social sector.

• Critically appraise the contents of a scientific article.

• Distinguish the particular meaning of English medical-scientific terminology from common English.

• Analytically describe the contents of a medical-scientific paper.

• Explain the contents of a scientific article in English.

PREREQUISITES

Students must possess basics of the English language, in terms of understanding, listening, reading and writing (Level B1).

TEACHING METHODS

Blended lessons (24 hours of online lessons, and 3 face-to-face lessons of 4 hours each) followed by an online test.

SESSION 2 – Nursing titles; Types of nurses; principal nursing activities; The concept of illness, disease and sickness; To care; False friends; Special meanings (Terminology 1)

SESSION 3 – Articles and plurals (Grammar 2)

SESSION 4 – Adjectives, pronouns, Simple Present Tense, Adverbs of frequency, time (Grammar 3)

SESSION 5 – Patients’ conditions (Terminology 2)

SESSION 6 – To Have (Simple Present) + Possessives (Grammar 4)

SESSION 7 – Regular and irregular verbs, Verbs with 2 complements, The Imperative, Interrogative adjectives & Pronouns (Grammar 5)

SESSION 8 – Modal Verbs (Grammar 6)

SESSION 9 – The nurse’s job; The doctor’s job; Specialists; The doctor’s tools; Giving instructions to patients (Terminology 3)
