OVERVIEW

This course proposes the reading and analysis of Russian prose and poetry. The specific topic and reading list change every year. The topic for 2017-2018 is:

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

These courses examine topics and problems in Russian literature and culture from its origins to the present. In class work includes the reading and translation of excerpts from the works of significant authors and critics.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course provides (1) familiarity with the basic elements of literary analysis, (2) an introduction to problems linked with the formation of a writer; (3) deeper familiarity with the works of Aleksandr Puškin, his themes and issues of concern

TEACHING METHODS

The course content will be delivered via classroom lectures with the support of Aulaweb.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

We will examine the figure of Aleksandr Puskin, Russian national poet, together with aspects of his literary production. Course themes will include: elements of Pushkin's biography (politics, identity, family and career, death), his role in Russia's "imaginary geography", the Pushkin cult in Russia and in the world (from "mirovaja literatura" to postmodernism).

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written and oral

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written and oral exam (for 6 credits) will include:

(1) a written exercise on a bibliografic problem to be presented orally (and which can be completed as a group of two).

(2) memorization of at least 16 lines of "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" (which we will choose together) and the oral discussion of problems that emerge from that excerpt (including problems of meter and rhyme).

(3a) a brief written exam (1 hr), open-book, on topics discussed in the classroom (excluding "The F of B").

OR (3b) the oral presentation of a work based on Pushkin's significance and heritage to be selected from the Bibliography (section "3b"). Option 3b is required for students who do not attend and STRONGLY recommended for those who attend less than 2/3 of the classes.

The exam may be held or taken in Russian, Italian, or English; students should choose the language in which they are able to express themselves more fully. This program "expires" in February 2020. Students who have not passed the exam by that time will be examined on the course program for 2019-20.

Attendance is strongly recommended.

Students should register for the course also on Aulaweb (which will be fundamental for updates).

One day a week will be dedicated to reading "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" in Russian. It is imperative, given the nature of this course, which is based on discussion, that students come to class prepared.

In order to enrich the students' knowledge of Russian culture, class lectures may be complemented with lectures held by visiting scholars.
