The course, scheduled in the second half of the accademic year, aims at introducing students to technological innovation in civil engineering, and at proposing an integrated view of structural design, taking into account both structural and non-structural performances such as resistance to fire, durability, building site management, cost efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
The course addresses innovative solutions in structural design, related to both structural systems (such as mixed steel-concrete structures) and non-structural elements (such as façade and curtain panels). Moreover, it analyses special performance of structures, such as robustness, resistance to fire, durability, building site management, cost efficiency, environmental sustainability, etc…introducing students to and integrated view of structural design.
This course addresses the following topics:
Frontal lessons
Monographic seminars with external experts
Experimental tests in lab
The course addresses the following topic:
1. Technological innovation in structural design
- evolution and design of mixed steel-concrete structures
- innovative solutions in the seismic design of buildings;
- innovative solutions in floor design;
- structural design of non-structural elements (façade and curtain panels).
2. Structural design for special performances
- structural robustness;
- resistance to fire;
- durability of structural systems;
- building site management;
- cost efficiency.
3. Environmental sustainability of structures
- principles of environmental sustainability;
- design criteria to reduce the environmental impacts of structures;
- Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of structural systems.
