To give the student a knowledge regarding the typology and physical running principles regarding the energy conversion machinery (i.e.: engines,  turbines, compressors, pumps), employed on the ships.

To give the student a knowledge regarding the typology and physical running principles regarding the energy conversion machinery (i.e.: engines,  turbines, compressors, pumps), employed on the ships.

TEACHING METHODS

Theoretical lessons and exercises.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  1. Generality: Energy conversion machinery classification. Main energy typologies and sources. Main physical and thermodynamic laws.
  2. Engines plants: Steam, gas turbine and combined plants: reference cycles, work, power, efficiency calculation and components (turbines, compressor, pumps) shape and working description. Optimization and governor methods.
  3.  Internal combustion engines: Typology, thermodynamic cycles, shape, supercharging, delivered power governor. Pollutant emissions and reduction methods.
  4. Fan and Compressor: Stage organization, physical working principles, blade shape.
  5. Pumps: Typology. Physical working principles. Cavitation and volumetric flow governor.
  6. Volumetric compressors and pumps: Typology, working description. Work, power and efficiency determination. Volumetric flow governor
