AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Pathophysiology represents the logical educational and cultural continuation of the course of General Pathology. It is the study of the abnormal physiological processes that cause or are associated with disease or injury. Students will learn how the body and its systems  and organs work when disease or injury occurs.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching is divided into 10 hours of classroom lectures on all the topics of the syllabus. The topics are explained by the teacher through PowerPoint presentations. The teacher always recommends the use of a textbook to expand the overall view of the subject.  The language is Italian.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

IMMUNE SYSTEM: Overview of Innate Immunity and Acquired Immunity main characteristics. B lymphocytes and antibodies. T lymphocytes.  Immunological tolerance. Hypersensitivity diseases and autoimmune diseases. Myasthenia gravis, Multiple sclerosis, Rheumatoid arthritis.

 DIABETES. Pathophysiology, and classification of diabetes. Acute and chronic complications.

ATEROSCLEROSIS - Definition, pathogenesis, pathophysiological consequences (eg thrombosis, embolism, infarction), risk factors (notes on hyperlipoproteinemias)

 ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION. Essential and secondary

LIVER PHYSIOPATHOLOGY

Classes are in the first semester and start in the second half of October, after the end of Pathology classes. The precise schedule is agreed with the coordinator responsible for the course and communicated on the website.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is an oral one, that consist in an interview with the teacher.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Verification of learning is carried out through the oral exam, aimed at verifying the real acquisition by the student of the expected learning outcomes. Several items will further contribute to the student evaluation:

-accuracy, clarity, synthesis and fluency;

- competence in the subject;

- speaking ability and correct use of terminology
