The course introduces to a sociological approach to family as a social group, with particular attention to the change's processes that in recent decades have involved families in Western societies
An in-deep knowledge on family transformation in current society
The aim of the course is to develop in students the ability to analyze familiar forms and their changes in the light of the different theoretical approaches presented and to use a critical view that overcomes prejudiced and stereotyped visions.
At the end of the course the students will be able to: use the specific sociological terminology of the discipline understanding, explaining and knowing how to refer the theoretical concepts (authors, theoretical approaches, historical and social contexts of reference ...) analyze the different family contexts in the light of changes over the centuries and read them with critical awareness through the comparison between the theoretical aspects and the research and / or professional experiences presented in class and through the study texts
The course will take place with different teaching methods: lectures, classroom discussions, presentation of texts by students. External experts will be invited to explore some specific elements.
The course will use the films and images produced by the Laboratory for Visual Sociology in order to address the topics of the syllabus.
The course will analyze in particular the relationship between the family and contemporary society, analyzing the significant changes of the last decades and the development of the concept of parenting. Particular attention will also be given to migratory phenomena and the presence of transnational families.
