Given the close relationship with the Geological Sciences, it provides the basic knowledge necessary to be able to describe, model and interpret the processes that define the different natural systems in the extreme variability of environmental conditions and temporal evolution. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES To provide a basic understanding of: I) the basic concepts of General Chemistry, II) the structure and properties of matter in relation to its constitution and its state of aggregation, III) the chemical equilibrium and the main types of reactions and reacting systems. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course is accompanied by laboratory experience whose main objective is to relate the different aspects of the theoretical part with their practical application, through the experimental verification of the most important concepts acquired in the course of General and Inorganic Chemistry. TEACHING METHODS Lectures Exercises Laboratory SYLLABUS/CONTENT Atomic structure of matter. Periodic table and periodic properties of the elements. Chemical bond. Chemical nomenclature. Chemical reactions. States of aggregation of the matter and their characteristics. Chemical equilibrium. Homogeneous and heterogeneous equilibria. Electrochemistry. Laboratory: Single-place practical exercises on the following topics: Chemical reactions in aqueous solution (acid-base, precipitation, complexation, oxide reduction). Characteristic reactions of cations and anions and their use in the separation of different ionic species simultaneously present in solution. Flame probe analysis. Inorganic qualitative analysis of an unknown mixture. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Text books of General and Inorganic Chemistry at university level can be used as reference texts, for example those mentioned below which are available, in the University Library. A.M. Manotti Lanfredi, A. Tiripicchio, Foundations of Chemistry, Ambrosiana I. Bertini, C. Luchinat, F. Mani, Chemistry, Ambrosiana P. Michelin Lausarot, G.A. Vaglio, Fundamentals of Stoichiometry, Piccin TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD PAVLO SOLOKHA Exam Board PAVLO SOLOKHA (President) SERENA DE NEGRI PAOLA RIANI LESSONS Class schedule GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY WITH LABORATORY EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION The exam consists of a written and an oral tests. During the course of teaching, two partial written tests are performed. Only by obtaining a sufficient score for a written test, a student will you be admitted to the oral exam. The oral examination is always conducted by two professors with experience in examinations in the discipline and it has a duration of at least 30 minutes. In the final evaluation laboratory activity is also taken into account, as documented in the reports delivered and corrected during the course ASSESSMENT METHODS The oral exam is always conducted by two professors with experience of examinations in the discipline and lasts at least 30 minutes. In this way the commission is able to accurately verify the achievement of teaching objectives. When these is not a case, the student is invited to deepen the study and are invited for a further explanations and clarifications by the professors in charge.
