OVERVIEW

As to the Animal Biology module, this course introduces the student to the cell main functions and mechanisms in order to present the cell as the living functional autonomous unit as well as a component of tissues and organs. At the same time, relatively to the Plant Biology module, the course provides the necessary basic knowledge about plant biology, which are mandatory to the study of drugs and active ingredients of plant origin that will be addressed in subsequent courses.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

For what the Animal Biology module is concerned, students will learn how fundamental molecular mechanisms regulate the main cellular functions, starting with morphology and internal organization of the cell to end up with the processing of the genetic information and the generation of specialized cell types. The main aim is to clearly define the cell as an autonomous functional living unit as well as a component of a higher-grade hierarchical order in living tissues and organs.

At the same time, during the Plant Biology Module, students will understand, through a morpho-functional comparison with animal organisms, which is the structural and functional organization of a plant cell as well of its metabolism, with the aim to provide ground for the comprehension of plant and plant-derived drugs relevance in the pharmaceutical field.

More detailed information is provided in each module (Plant Biology: #55416; Animal Biology: #55417).
