OVERVIEW

AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND PHOTOGRAPHY IN XX CENTURY

With the advent of photography, in the mid-nineteenth century, the notion of representation, no longer the prerogative of artists and writers, but also of photographers, was challenged. Thus photography has become part of the literary work. The course aims to follow the evolution and development of the French Literary Autobiography in relation to the photography.

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities (lectures and online activities) and individual study will enable the student to:
- have solid knowledge on the general lines of twentieth century French cultural and literary history;
- read and understand complex texts and phototext;
- contextualizing literary productions in culture and in the historical period of reference.
- know how to use the methods and basic tools of the narratological analysis;
- know how to identify the intermediary relations present in the texts;
- use basic analytical methods and tools to interpret the works of the main authors.

PREREQUISITES

Adequate knowledge of the French language and of the history of literature until 1900. Attitude to the subject, curiosity and desire to learn.

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lessons, flipped classroom, tasked based learning and work group.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course aims to follow the evolution and development of the French literary autobiography of the period indicated in relation to the development of the photography. 
A study in deep on the novel's theory from nineteenth century to twentieth century will be the topic of the course in its extension of 18 hours for students wishing to acquire 9 credits and it will be in commob with the 2nd year course.

CONTENTS

Autobiographie et Photographie: 
  • L'avènement de la photographie et ses conséquences dans le développement de la littérature
  • Surréalisme et photographie: André Breton, Nadja
  • Autobiographie et photographie au XXe siècle : Marcel Proust (A la recherche du temps perdu),  Marguerite Duras (L'Amant), Annie Ernaux (La Place), Christian Garcin (J'ai grandi), Annie Duperay (Le voile noir), George Perec (W ou le souvenir d'enfance), Claude Simon (Histoire).

ANTHOLOGICAL READINGS: the texts that will be read and analyzed during the lessons will be published on the aulaweb and will constitute exam material for the students attending. The final list of readings will be published on aulaweb at the end of the course.

INTEGRAL READINGS: three works of your choice agreed with the teacher among those presented in class and scheduled.

GROUP WORKS for the analysis of the inter-media relations established between photography and autobiography will take place during the entire duration of the course for attending students. How to participate and contents will be illustrated in class and will be on aulaweb.

PROGRAM B FOR NON-ATTENDING
History of 20th Century French autobiography studied in the Bibliography Manual.
Deepening on the relationships between autobiography and photography. (Choice of three essays that will be made available on Aulaweb at the beginning of the course)
Reading 6 works in full (from those on the list that will be published on Aulaweb at the beginning of the course).

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will consist of an oral examination in French on the contents of the course, through questions formulated by the Commission.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

For attending students:
The candidate must choose an anthological extract from those scheduled and will have available twenty minutes to prepare. Following the presentation of the contents of the text, at least one question will be asked of the candidate concerning the readings. In the assessment of the exam will be taken into account, as well as the knowledge of the program to be performed (topics covered in class, reading and analysis of texts proposed during lessons, materials made available on the platform aulaweb and readings of the full texts), also of the exhibition capacity and accuracy in the use of the specific language of the discipline.
For non-attending students:
The candidate must demonstrate: knowledge of the history of twentieth century French literature; to have carried out the readings of complete works and to be able to expose the contents, the literary and generic characteristics, the authorial and stylistic specificities; to know the characteristics of the relationship between literature and photography in the twentieth century. In the assessment of the exam will take into account, as well as the knowledge of the program to be carried out, also the exhibition capacity and accuracy in the use of the specific language of the discipline.
