AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Through course attendance and individual study, the student: - knows the evolution of the history of Spanish literature from its origins to the seventeenth century. - can read and translate a literary text - can contextualize a literary work or a text - can comment and analyze a literary text - will know the literary epochs and the historical-political and cultural contexts in which they developed - will know how to relate the great European cultural currents to the works and authors studied. TEACHING METHODS 36 hours of lectures, individual study of the manuals in the bibliography, study of the material published in aulaweb SYLLABUS/CONTENT - Castilian literature of the Middle Ages: Jarchas, Poema de Mio Cid, mester de clerecía, El Arcipreste de Hita, los Cancioneros, Jorge Manrique, La Celestina, los Romanceros. - "Siglo de Oro" (Renaissance and Baroque): Poetry (Garcilaso de la Vega, san Juan de la Cruz, fray Luis de León, santa Teresa de Jesús, Luis de Góngora, Francisco de Quevedo); Prose (Lazarillo de Tormes, Miguel de Cervantes); Theatre (Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Calderón de la Barca). During the lessons, we will read, comment and analyze a selection of texts. We will also consider the birth and development of the various literary currents, placing them in the historical-political, economic and artistic framework of the western culture in which they come to life. A more detailed program will be provided during the course. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY The bibliography will be communicated during the course and published in aulaweb. For attending students, the course notes and the materials in aulaweb are also a part of the examination program. A part chosen by the student must be told in Spanish. ASSESSMENT METHODS The student must demonstrate knowledge of the bibliography and course notes (for attending students), and of being able to read, translate, comment and contextualize a proposed literary text. For attending students, a mid-course written test is scheduled. Students will need to demonstrate that they: - Know the themes and stylistic evolution of Spanish literature from its origins to the seventeenth century; - Know how to comment and analyze literary texts and contextualize them; - Understand the original texts, primary and secondary literature on the proposed themes.
