AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course addresses innovative solutions in structural design, related to both structural systems (such as mixed steel-concrete structures) and non-structural elements (such as façade and curtain panels). Moreover, it analyses special performance of structures, such as robustness, resistance to fire, durability, building site management, cost efficiency, environmental sustainability, etc…introducing students to and integrated view of structural design. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES This course addresses the following topics: Introduction to advanced and contemporary construction materials and structural systems Detailed analysis and design of mixed steel-concrete structures Design criteria of structures for special performances Principles of environmental sustainability in structural design TEACHING METHODS Frontal lessons Monographic seminars with external experts Experimental tests in lab SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course addresses the following topic: 1. Technological innovation in structural design - evolution and design of mixed steel-concrete structures - innovative solutions in the seismic design of buildings; - innovative solutions in floor design; - structural design of non-structural elements (façade and curtain panels). 2. Structural design for special performances - structural robustness; - resistance to fire; - durability of structural systems; - building site management; - cost efficiency. 3. Environmental sustainability of structures - principles of environmental sustainability; - design criteria to reduce the environmental impacts of structures; - Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of structural systems.
