OVERVIEW

The course aims at providing students with a basic knowledge of the history of Italian and, more specifically, an overview of the linguistic history of Italian theatre.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Basic knowledge of the history of Italian; knowledge of the sociolinguistic variations of Italian and the relationships between standard Italian and regional varieties; knowledge of the main traits of innovation of the so-called neostandard Italian; knowledge of the key moments in the linguistic history of Italian theatre and peculiar stylistic features of its main authors.

To define and identify the main traits of neostandard Italian. Elementary knowledge of the history of Italian literature

Essential history of Italian language. Sociolinguistic overview of contemporary Italian. Synthetic overview of the linguistic history of Italian theatre.

For students who do not attend classes: Paolo D'Achille, L'italiano contemporaneo, Bologna, il Mulino (in place of lecture notes).

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written (short essay questions) and oral examination.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Written exam to test the student’s knowledge of the history of Italian language and of the main traits of neostandard Italian; oral examination to test the student’s knowledge of the linguistic history of Italian theatre. The final mark will be calculated by taking the average of the two tests (written and oral)
