AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will be instructed on the general processes involved in the eco-morphodynamics of tidal environments, gaining useful skills to research and consultancy purposes

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module aims to provide some knowledge about the morphodynamic evolution of tidal basins and estuaries. Estuaries and lagoons are indeed important nature areas in and around which many human activities take place. These features together with the adjacent coasts form a coherent system in terms of water movement, sediment budget and morphology. The knowledge in this area is thus needed for the sustainable management of coastal systems. This involves ensuring safety against flooding, optimal economic use and preservation of the natural character of the systems.

TEACHING METHODS

The lectures are organized in about 50 hours of theory.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Tidal waves. Constant width estuaries. Weakly convergent estuaries. Hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of shallow tidal basins. Introduction to Ecohydraulics. Biofilms. Plants, hydraulics and sediment dynamics. Sea level rise effects.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

During the course students will have to download and read scientific papers and book chapters. These are all freely available from aulaweb. A detailed literature list will be made available at the start of the course.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam includes only an oral examination which is aimed at ascertaining the degree of knowledge of the topics described during the lectures. Usually, the students will be asked three questions on relatively large subjects, leaving the details to the following discussion.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

If necessary, during the examination, the student will also be asked to solve simple problems to test the operational capabilities acquired.
