OVERVIEW

Climate change affects the social and environmental determinants of health, clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter.

The course describes the complex factors that govern climate change and the possible mitigation and adaption measures that can be undertaken, also at the level of industrial production.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides competence about climate change and Greenhouse gases emissions (GHG), through the application of the Kyoto Protocol and the EU Emission Trading System.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this study, through lessons attendance and training activities such as oral lessons and exercises, the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the key topics about mitigation and adaptation to Climate Change
  •  Know competently the main factors that govern Climate Change
  • Apply measures for GHG emissions reduction
  • Design and assess the performance related to GHG emissions in production plants, using simulation or optimization tools

PREREQUISITES

The course has no specific prerequisites. However, for a successful learning, basic knowledge on mathematics, chemical and physics are required.

TEACHING METHODS

The course foreseen oral lessons, exercises, educational field trips, use of calculation software

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists in passing a written test and an oral exam.

Three exam sessions will be foreseen during the summer session (June, July and September) and four exam sessions will be foreseen during the winter session and during the fall stop of the Polytechnic School. No extraordinary further exam sessions will be issued outside the regular Polytechnic School periods, with the exceptions of students without didactic activities in their current academic year curriculum.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written test cosists of multiple choice questions, greenhouse gas emission calculation, evaluation of different GHG emission mitigation options. It is necessary to obtain at least a score of 60/100 to access the oral exam.

During the oral examination, there will be questions on the topics covered during the frontal lessons and present in the teaching material provided.

Quality of the presentation, correct terminology, and critical thinking skills will also be evaluated.
