This course is divided in two modules: one focused on field mapping and the second one is an introduction to the interpretation of geological maps. The “Geological Mapping 1” concerns the basic methods and techniques for the collection of geological data in the field (i.e.; lithology, stratigraphy, structures, etc.) and their representation on a geological map. The “Introduction to Geological Maps” deals with the reading and interpretation of geological maps and the representation of three-dimensional geological structures on a geological cross-section.
The course provides students with the main geological field techniques and methods used in geological mapping and teaches them how to operate as field geologists. The course gives the basics for the interpretation of geological and structural maps. The course also includes several days of field exercises and a final 6-days field campaign.
In order to be able to deal with the contents of this course, basic knowledge of the reading of topographic maps, geomorphology and petrography (classification of rocks), stratigraphy, structural geology are necessary
