OVERVIEW

The course of Elements and sources for Roman history aims to provide the first-year student with a framework of the themes and problems relating to the period characterized by the presence of Rome in ancient historical reality, as well as a presentation of the work method of the historian and developments of historiography starting from the progressive professionalization of the discipline.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is, on the one hand, to provide the student of the master's degree in 'Historical Sciences' with insights on concepts, themes and problems already addressed during the course of Roman History followed during the three-year History; on the other hand to show him the way to understand the work of the historian and to get to know the tools he uses (sources, methodology and historiography).

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The objectives that the teaching aims at are three:

1) understand the structural aspects of Roman society, in its various fields and problems;

2) learn to become familiar with the historiographical lexicon and with the "tools of the trade" of the historian, that is the primary and secondary sources;

3) acquire a method of critical-scientific interpretation of classical sources, knowing how to use the specific bibliographic tools and the fundamental techniques of analysis of literary, epigraphic and archaeological documents.

PREREQUISITES

1) good basic preparation regarding the knowledge of Roman history;

2) competence in the methods of analysis, interpretation and ecdotics of classical sources dropped, in their historical context;

3) knowledge of the fundamental methodologies of study and research, through the ability to apply the historical-critical method in exegesis and interpretation of auditory documents for the interpretation of events and / or characters;

4) updated bibliographic information and, in any case, knowledge of the main research and study tools, including the various online resources;

5) good oral and written argumentation skills, based on a scientifically appropriate language.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures will NOT be done in presence but remotely on Teams platform (given the Covid emergency 19); seminars will be organized on sources and historiography, to explain the work methods of the historian and the construction of historiographical knowledge.

In the final phase of the course, assignment of topics concerning the period analyzed to individual students, with drafting of written papers, exposition and discussion in the classroom.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will be in oral form and the final evaluation will take into account the objectives achieved, as well as the written reports and possibly discussed in the classroom by the student.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

In the exam, which will be held in oral form, will be proposed by examining one or more specific topics contained in the indicated texts. The examiner will be asked to illustrate these topics in a critical and correct manner, using an appropriate language; his ability to establish significant links with other topics addressed during the lessons (for attending students) will also be verified.

In addition, individual or group research will be required for those who have not had the opportunity to exhibit them in the classroom.
