AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course offers an overview of the main competing moral theories of the contemporary debate, both from a metaethical and a normative standpoint, with particular reference to the analytic tradition.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at the following learning outcomes:

- knowing the main competing moral theories of the contemporary analytic debate and their historical roots;

- discussing and evaluating their competing theses and analyzing their diverse foundational and normative strategies;

- mastering the competing reasoning models proposed, and arguing from them

- reading, interpreting and discussing classic works and specialistic texts (mainly articles), and presenting them with an adequate technical language.

PREREQUISITES

A previous basic knowledge of the main classic ethical theories and problems is required, as well as the knowledge of some essential readings.

TEACHING METHODS

In the first part of the course, lessons will be given with the aid of ppt presentations. In the second part, students are expected to present and discuss specialistic texts (mainly, articles) related to one of the key themes of the course.

Both parts have the form of seminars, rather than lectures, and are focused on discussion.

The course is part of the University of Genoa teaching innovation project. Therefore, students will be asked to participate in highly interactive seminars which will be held in collaboration with the course of Philosophy of Science (Prof.Cristina Amoretti).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

6-CFU course:

Ethics and metaethics in the contemporary debate

9-CFU course:

1) Kantian constructivism between metaethics and normative claims

2) Models of moral reasoning and moral dilemmas

The third part of the course will concern the epistemoligical and ethical implications of specific clinical cases. It will consist in a joint seminar in collaboration with the Philosophy of science course (Prof. Cristina Amoretti).

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Please note that international students can email Prof. Vaccarezza to agree upon a different reading list, if needed. In this case, they are supposed to do so in due time before the exam (min. 1 month), or else they won't be allowed to take the exam.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

For all students, the exam will be oral.

Students attending classes: 1/3 of the final evaluation will depend on the quality of the discussion and of the oral presentation in class.

Students not attending classes: please, email Prof. Vaccarezza in due time to agree upon the reading list. 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will consist in an inteview on the topics of the course. 

The attainment of the main learnign outcomes will be assessed and discussed.
