OVERVIEW

Archaeozoology is the study of osteological animal finds from archaeological excavations from prehistory to the current day. This illustrates and defines relations between man and the animal world, highlighting the relationship Fs/ Fd  (> = <) both from a zoological point of view and an archaeological point of view (stratigraphy and chronology) to highlight material use (food, labour, hide and artefacts) as a socioeconomic, cultural and religious function.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Archaeozoology course aims to give the fundamental indications to be able to recognise and contextualise osseous finds with particular attention to animal bones.

excellent knowledge of animal skeletons and their five parts, the various components of the five parts, the animal world of vertebrates.

interdisciplinary of the development of archaeozoology with its two spheres: naturalistic and cultural (archaeology, ancient history, history of art, cultural and socioeconomic components).

lectures, direct experience of osteological material, constant use of digitalised images, constant student interaction through direct questions

Framing of the course in the context of archaeology.

four phases =

first = acquiring material during excavation

second = laboratory analysis: determination and fundamental knowledge: skeleton and its components and the world of vertebrates

determining criteria: size, morphology and type. metric measurement and, to establish use made by man, the use of measurement of wear of teeth.

third = elaboration of naturalistic and archaeological data: man-animal relations from prehistory to modern times. = Wild and/or domesticated fauna

fourth = the use of data for publications, museums and/or exhibitions.
