OVERVIEW

How does geography study and analyze the interactions between natural, socio-cultural, economic and political systems? Is the map an objective representation of the territory? The course aims to offer a knowledge of the orientations of human geography, with insights on the geo-literary perspective in the study of territories, on sustainable development and the human impact on the environment; as well as solicit a conscious use of the cartographic tool.
 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to offer students a general knowledge in the field of human geography, with reference to the different orientations of contemporary geography. Furthermore, students will acquire a basic critical reading skill and the use of geographic and topographic maps. Particular attention will be paid to the methods of teaching.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course has as main objectives:

- to make students understand that geography is the discipline that studies the relationships between the human group and the environment, and their evolution over time;

- provide the basics of the discipline and knowledge of the main themes and problems for the interpretation and analysis of socio-political-territorial dynamics;

- transmit a basic ability to  use and read  geographical and topographical maps critically.

- to acquire skills to analyze the organization of socio-spatial systems, in particular the relationship between society, politics and space, the latter understood as a social product.

At the end of the course the students will be able:

- to illustrate the theoretical references related to the evolution of geography and the main models of spatial analysis;

- to present and analyze the main themes of human, economic, political and cultural geography, also according to a disciplinary teaching perspective;

- to critically examine contemporary problems and perspectives with a transcalar approach, from local to global;

- to acquire and use appropriately the specialized and technical vocabulary of the discipline;

- to read and interpret topographical and thematic maps;

- to use geographical skills to analyze and compare socio-economic-spatial systems.

PREREQUISITES

They are not required. It is advisable to use an atlas during the development and preparation of the program

TEACHING METHODS

- Lessons in telematic mode, through Teams, with projection and discussion of slides and videos,

- reading and analysis of graphs, maps, images and statistical data,

- interactive discussions, through wooclap (tool for immediate answers), on some geographical themes, also starting from a visual approach,

- reading exercise and analysis of a topographic map,

- for the cartography part, self-assessment of knowledge tests will be available on Aulaweb (in timed and non-timed form).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Students who attend for 6 CFU will study the following topics (corresponding to the following manual chapters): basic notions of geography, population geography, culture and wine geography, primary activities, models of development and change.

Students who attend for 9 CFU will study the following topics (corresponding to the following manual chapters): basic notions of geography, population geography, wine culture and geography, primary activities, models of development and change, urban systems, political organization of space..

Students who attend for 12 CFU will study the following topics (corresponding to the following manual chapters): basic notions of geography, population geography, culture and wine geography, primary activities, development and change models, urban systems, political organization of space, human impact on the environment and sustainable development, cartography and surveying techniques..

During the lessons updated and in-depth data on the contents and the topics addressed will be provided.

GEOGRAPHY

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam takes place in oral form, through an interview on the topics covered in class, on the materials provided and on the texts in the program. The interview will also include the critical analysis of images, graphs, tables, maps and videos and the personal return of the exit on the ground.

For attending students (12 CFU teaching) it will be possible to take an in itinere cartography test by means of a written test (with multiple choice and open questions) that is considered passed with a minimum grade of 18 out of 30. The test vote will contribute as weighted average to the final evaluation of the exam (equal to one sixth of the overall grade). Passing the cartography test does not expire in time. Those who do not perform or who do not pass the in itinere  test  will support the part of the cartography orally during the exam sessions, with the same voting conditions.

Non-attending students (12 CFU teaching) must take the exam on the cartography part in oral form (Chapter 13 of the manual); passing the part of the cartography is a necessary condition for the continuation of the other parts of the examination (remaining Chapters of the manual and 3 texts of your choice).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The interview:

- will evaluate the knowledge of the main theoretical references and spatial analysis models treated in class and present in the study texts;

- will allow to verify the ability to present and critically evaluate the main aspects, processes and problems faced by human, political and cultural geography;

The evaluation will take into account:

- quality of exposure and appropriate use of the specialized vocabulary:

- argumentative capacity and critical reasoning on the study carried out;

- ability to make connections between the different topics addressed.
