OVERVIEW

The art of medieval Liguria will be examined, with regard to the various kinds of artworks, starting from the early christian Era to embrace the beginning of the 15th century. The focus on Genoa will benefit from the direct examination of artworks, urban spaces and monuments.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to introduce the fundamental lines and dynamics of artistic production in Liguria, since the eraly christian Era to the beginning of 15th century, with regard to the Mediterranean context and extra-regional connections.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course of Art of medieval Liguria aims to

-guide students to understand the medieval artistic production in Liguria, with a high regard to specific contexts, to the role of artists and patrons, to the bounds with historical and social events;

-stimulate students to analyze the Ligurian artistic production, especially considering the connections among interior areas, with other Italian and Euro-Mediterranean regions.

At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to

-analyze and discuss with appropriate methodologies both images and artworks examined during the lessons;

-place works of art in their chronological and cultural context, discussing their connections with each other and with the broader horizon of medieval art;

-critically debate what they learned, discussing artworks in their connection with Ligurian history of art.

PREREQUISITES

No specific prerequisits are required.

TEACHING METHODS

The 40 hours course will provide classroom lessons and outdoor lessons. Images discussed in classroom lessons will be organized in thematic files.

At the end of the course, the images will be available for students: the teacher will either send them by mail or directly provide them during his meeting time.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The fundamental developments of medieval Ligurian art, since the early christian Era to the high Middle Ages, between European models and Mediterranean languages. Romanesque and Gothic Liguria: monumental arts, applied arts. Genoa: artistic production in a Mediterranean capital.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

For both attending and non-attending students, the final exam will consist of a conversation about at least three course-related topics, both general and specific, starting from teacher's questions about images and artworks analyzed during the lessons, as well as the suggested bibliography.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will evaluate the student's skills to apply the notions she/he learned, to analyze artworks discussed during the course, to understand their cultural and artistic features, to use discipline-specific terms and concepts.

Fundamental parameters of evaluation will be the student's ability to understand the discussed materials (images, artworks, texts), the way in which she/he analyzes them, with a critic attitude and an appropriate language.

The student will receive a pass mark if she/he will show to manage the fundamental notions of the course, concerning the key-artworks and their chronological and cultural position.

The student will receive an excellence mark if she/he will show to fluently master the content of the course, with a personal contribution of critical attitude expressed with an appropriate language.
