The primary source of these representations is usually the Life of Antonio, written in Greek by Athanasius and translated into Latin by Evagrius of Antakya. In some cases, however, less ‘canonical’ texts were privileged: this applies to the Legenda breviarii illustrated in a fifteenth-century fresco of the church of San Fiorenzo in Bastia, and to the Legenda mirabilis translated from Arabic by Alfonsus Bonihominis which inspired many illuminations in the Vita et acta Antonii abbatis, which also draws on the aforementioned Legenda breviarii.
