Theory module: Diamesic variation, diaphasic variation and translation
Language courses: Language for special purposes, technical translation, interpreting, and terminology
This course seeks to provide students with specialist knowledge and skills in German linguistics and translation and to delve into individual aspects, including languages for special purposes, such as economics and business. It provides for the support of courses, held by professional translators, interpreters and language assistants, native speakers of German and Italian, aimed at practical learning of the language and of interlinguistic mediation at the specialist level, and of an interpreting module in which basic techniques of dialogic interpretation are applied.
Aims and learning outcomes (theory module)
• Develop metalinguistic reflection on translation issues, with particular attention to the translation of the diamesic and diaphasic variation and taking into account the features of the “language of immediacy” and “language of distance” as described in the model developed by Koch & Oesterreicher.
• The use of glossaries and terminology databases, monolingual and multilingual reference works, corpora, and online dictionaries are intended to build and expand metalinguistic skills.
At the end of the course, the students
• have in-depth knowledge of both the diamesic and diaphasic variation in German and of the model developed by Koch & Oesterreicher;
• have the ability to apply the acquired to the translation of marked oral, written and multimedia texts;
• are able to present, comment, and evaluate in German their own translation activity;
• have developed skills in the use of language databases, mono- and multilingual reference works, terminology databases, and online dictionaries.
Aims and learning outcomes (language learning modules, translation, and interpreting)
The courses aim to enable students to reach level C1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The aim of the courses (language learning courses) is to reflect critically on one's translation practice and to develop skills
• in the textual and traductological analysis of economic and legal texts;
• in translating economic and legal texts from Italian into German and from German into Italian;
• in conference interpreting and simultaneous interpreting;
• in terminology theory and in the writing of terminology entries in German;
After successfully completing the language learning courses the students have active and passive language skills in the German language at level C1 of the CEFR.
Students must demonstrate a C1 level of language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)
The course ("theory module") will combine various modes, mainly frontal lecturing, flipped classroom, and blended learning; PPT presentations and multimedia will be used. During the course (theoretical 'module') various exercises will be assigned with the aim of gradually checking the knowledge acquired. The "theory module" (30 h, 1st semester) is accompanied by year-round language learningand interpreting courses.

Theory module 30 h (1st semester) (Prof. Dr. Simona Leonardi). In accordance with the public health measures designed to slow the COVID-19, the course will be held remotely through the Teams and Aulaweb platforms.
Language learning modules, translation, and interpreting: In accordance with the public health measures designed to contain the COVID-19, in the 1st semester all courses will be held remotely through the Teams and Aulaweb platforms. The courses scheduled for 2nd semester 2021 are expected to take place regularly.
GERMAN LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION II
Theory module (25% of the final mark): At the end of the course PPT presentation to the class based on the work done during the course. The final exam will consist of an oral commentary on the presentation. During the oral examination of the theoretical 'module', knowledge of the course content will also be verified. The assessment will take into account a) the PPT presentation (previously sent to the teacher); b) the adequacy of the references related to the presentation; c) knowledge of the course content; d) familiarity with the the readings discussed during the course and with the materials made available on the Aulaweb platform.
Translation and interpreting (75% of the final mark): written exams (specialized translation), oral exam (interpreting).
In accordance with further public health measures designed to contain the COVID-19 exam forms may differ from the above.

Target group: Mandatory modules for first and second year students of Translation and Interpreting (LM 94) who have German as a main subject.
Credit Points: The entire course (theory class + translation and interpreting) is credited with 12 credit points (CP / ECTS).
Language: Lessons will be held in German.
