OVERVIEW

The course is immediately follows the course "Costruzioni Navali B" and represents its natural continuation in terms of content. The student accesses the course with basic skills about the scantling of boats, which allows him to make design choices using highly simplified methods. The course intends to deepen the structural models to provide the student with the necessary skills to develop more refined scantling methods.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is to evaluate the effect of high speed and the resulting dynamic loads on the structures of planing boats , the identification and understanding of the structural problems of sailing ships , evaluating the effect of fatigue on structural details subject to stress concentrations .

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course deals, in detail, with the description of the types of stresses originting in a yacht starting from internal and external loads. The hierarchy of tensions will be widely described, as well as the effects of each stress component on structural elements will be taken into account for the purposes of scantling, also showing scantling methods able to consider the effects of combined stresses..

PREREQUISITES

The teachings of building science are fundamental for understanding the topics presented along with the lectures, as well as the contents of courses of "Costruzioni Navali"A and B.

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lecture with application exercises supported by spreadsheets (excel).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Calculation of primary stress characteristics (hull girder)

Scantling of local structural elements according to combined stresses (primary and tertiary)

Structural grilliage and secondary response estimation

Limit states (fatigue, buckling, ultimate state)

Notes on torsion (dimensioning of the axis line)

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written test where the student will be asked to solve one of the structural problems presented during the course, followed by oral exam.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written test aims at verifying the student's ability to solve a practical problem of structural santling, according to the methods presented during the course. The oral exam is aimed at verifying the learning of the theoretical bases on which the scnalting methods are based.
