AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The goal of the course is to provide the students with the basic knowledge of the mechanical properties of materials, as well as the influence of chemical composition on the behaviour of metallic materials.

The description of the foundry processes and of the main plastic deformation operations follows.

Lectures

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The introduction to the basic principles of the mechanics of solids (stress and strain) will be followed by the studies on elastic state and the theory of plasticity.

Next, the behaviour of materials in different stress conditions will be analyzed, as well as their brittleness and ductility.

Equilibrium state diagrams of the metallic alloys are described, with particular care concerning the Fe-C phase diagram and the influence of the main alloy components on the properties of metallic materials.

Next, the effects of thermal treatments are analysed.

The standardized tests will be described, by which it’s possible to define the mechanical and technological properties of materials.

The following point is the description of the foundry processes and the main plastic deformation operations (rolling, forging, extrusion, die drawing).

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of two parts: written and oral.

The written test lasts 20 minutes. The oral test can be performed only passing the written test. The two parts of the exam take place in the same day.

During the written test, the student has to solve a numerical exercise, about the topics of Chapters 1,2 and 3 of the book.

During the oral test, the student has to answer three questions:

the first about the topics of Chapters 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 of the book;

the second about the topics of Chapters 8, 10, 11 and 12 of the book;

the third about the topics of Chapter 9 of the book.
