Manufacturing technology module introduces the fundamental topics for the study of the production processes used by manufacturing industries, specifically metal cutting processes.
This module provides the tools to study mechanical metrology (including surface micro- and nano-geometry), metal cutting, considering cinematic and dynamic theoretical models, the machine tools, their kinematics, structures, the generation of forms, the transducers and the basic principle of the machine tools numerical control.
The student at the end of the course will be able to
The course includes lectures, exercises and laboratory activity with automatic evaluation delivered through Internet.
Introduction to manufacturing. Mechanical metrology: measures, measurement uncertainty, indirect measurements, statistical analysis for repeated measures, measurements and instruments, interferometry, CMM; surface microgeometry, parameters and instruments, 3D analysis, nano-geometry, AFM. Metal cutting: tool geometry and chip formation, orthogonal cutting, cinematic and dynamic models, cutting forces and dynamometers, metal cutting thermodynamics and temperature measurement; tools materials, wear mechanisms, tool life and predictive models. Machine tools: kinematics and generation of paths, structures, guides, spindles, mechanisms and motors, transducers; analog and digital control (NC).
