TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The course introduces the student to the world of materials used in industrial plant engineering analyzing the problems related to the design and joining of components currently present in the industrial world.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge of metal materials and corrosion protection systems that exist and industrially used . The course also aims to introduce the student to the design of industrial plants for the treatment of fluids.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course students will have the basic knowledge and will be able to choose between metallic materials (galvanized steels, stainless steels, titanium alloys, nickel alloys), the one to be used to realize the different parts of an industrial plant evaluating the mechanical and thermal conditions. In addition, the student will be able to identify the joining techniques to be used to assemble the parts, recognizing the typical defects of welding processes. Finally, the student will have at his disposal the means for the design of industrial systems characterized by significant thermal or mechanical stress.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching consists of lectures, during which the professor also makes use of videos to understand the various aspects of metallic materials and the principles of operation of fluid process plants.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The goal of the course is to provide the students with the basic knowledge of the behavior of metallic materials (galvanized steels, stainless steels, titanium alloys and nickel alloys) used in industrial plants. The main joining processes of these materials are analyzed.

Directive PED (97/23/CE) is also described with particular application to Group 1 (oil, natural gas) and Group 2 (overheated water, saturated and overheated steam) fluid involving plants. P&I and functional schemas are presented and discussed as well as decompression substations, regulating station and safety equipments. Test criteria, pipe racks and other constraints are also presented.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam includes an oral exam during which four questions will be asked.
The first two questions will focus on the basic concepts on metallic materials and joining techniques.
The third and fourth questions will concern the process plants and their design.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Details on how to prepare for the exam and the degree of depth of each topic will be given during the lessons.

The oral examination involves the discussion of four topics covered during the lectures and will have the purpose of assessing whether the student has reached a level of knowledge of the appropriate concepts, will also evaluate the ability to choose a material and the design of a plant part.
