The course aims to provide knowledge of heat transfer equipment, such as the classic tube heat exchangers, plate exchangers, Compact Heat Exchangers; than students study the direct contact heat exchangers, such as evaporative cooling and condensers; finally the course analyzes the thermal design of recuperators and their proper use in plants.
At the end of the module the students will have acquired the skills for selecting, sizing and evaluate the performance of many heat exchanger categories present in industrial and civil installations.
In addition to theoretical knowledge of analysis and modelling, the students will have acquired a technical qualification enabling them in designing heat exchanger systems and in the optimization of the performance.
The course consists of lectures and practical applications.
Heat exchangers: Classification. Logarithmic mean temperature difference. Efficiency. NTU. Check operating conditions of a heat exchanger. Influence of fouling on heat exchange performance. Cross flow heat exchangers. Compact heat exchangers. Plate heat exchangers. Direct contact heat exchangers: evaporative cooling and condensers. Thermal design of recuperators.

Oral examinations are planned after preparing a written report on the exercises undertaken.
The exam consists in an oral test in which, for every matter of the course, are formulated questions or simple exercises
Pre-requisites :
Students can take the Heat Exchanger examination if they have acquired of at least 10 credits on fundamental aspects However, they should have a positive figure for the exams of Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Physics
