AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The second module introduces the methods of visual sociology. Visual sociology purports to study visual images as cultural products. The goal of the second oart is to study visual output: its production, consumption and meaning in society.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

To develop a critical knowledge on the place of images in contemporary societies

To develop an introductory knowledge on filmic and visual methods applied to social theory and research, with a specific focus on borders and migration

TEACHING METHODS

The course opts for a teaching method focused on participation, direct experience, knowledge co-production. The course will use films and images produced by the Laboratory for Visual Sociology

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will explore possibilitues and the transformation involved by visual methodology in social description and interpretation in the following fields:

- Visual theories

-migrations

- social movements and solidarity practices

- oral exam on books and articles for students non attending classes  

ASSESSMENT METHODS

For students attending classes: the course will assess the students ability to articulate sociological knowledge with micro research experience in different fields

For all students: the course will assess the students ability to  applly visual theory and methods in the analysis of different social phenomena
