OVERVIEW

The module comprises 36 hours of classes. About 20 hours will be devoted to practising grammar and vocabulary in order to achieve a B1-level competence in English, in accordance with CEFR standards (https://www.efset.org/english-score/cefr/b1/). The remaining time will be more specifically devoted to the study of English in the media, and the discussion of some TED talks.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module aims to strengthen the students’ knowledge of the English language. The target level is B1 (Pre-Intermediate), in accordance with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Roughly half of the module will be devoted to a review of grammar and vocabulary. The other half will be devoted more specifically to English as used in the media, using a specific textbook, and to a critical evaluation of presentation skills, using the example of select TED talks.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module is conceived specifically to improve direct, verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on the technical vocabulary of communication, on pronounciation, and on specific communication techniques and skills. Students will be able to grasp the essential information in complex texts (through reading or listening comprehension), and answer simple questions about them.

TEACHING METHODS

Work in the classroom sees the direct involvement of students, and will need to be integrated with homework for those who fall short of the expected B1 level. For more information and syllabus materials, please check out AulaWeb (https://2019.aulaweb.unige.it/).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The module comprises two main units: one concerns basic grammar and vocabulary, with an emphasis on everyday language. Work in the classroom will need to be integrated with homework, particularly for students who are significantly behind the expected B1 language skills. Students will sit a written test to verify their language skills at the end of the semester.

Separate work will be done on the language, activities and dynamics of the media. The aim is to provide students with some of the basic technical vocabulary used in the media. Finally, a few TED talks will be viewed and discussed together, with a view to introducing students to presentation skills. and improving their listening comprehension and vocabulary. Both these topics will be verified in a face-to-face interview.
