AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course, paving on a managerial approach, aims to analyse the operations and strategies of firms and public organizations operating in maritime logistics. The course focuses on main theoretical concepts and perspectives related to maritime transport demand and segmentation, port cargo handling, transport capacity deployment and management, as well as competitive and growth strategies. Emphasis will be given to multinational corporations operating in shipping and ports, i.e. firms that diversify risk and their business portfolio. In addition, the organization and strategies of Port Authorities is addressed, by emphasizing the diverse governance settings in some relevant countries.

PART 1 – Shipping: firms and strategies. 1.A. Background and drivers of changes in the industry; 1.B. The supply of maritime transport; 1.C. Shipowners and strategic decisions; 1.D. The shipping markets: chartering, shipbuilding, second-hand, scrapping; 1.E. Bulk shipping; 1.F. Specialized shipping; 1.G. general cargoes and the containerization; 1.H. Mega-vessels and cost leadership strategies; 1.I. Pricing strategies; 1.J. Growth strategies and collaborative schemes.

PART 2 – Ports: players, governance and strategies. 2.A. Introductory notes; 2.B. New Public management, governance and reform processes; 2.C. Port planning & forecasting; 2.D. PPPs and concessions; 2.E. Port labour; 2.F. Finance of Port Authorities; 2.G. Marketing strategies and internationalization processes of Port Authorities; 2.H. Conflicts in ports and stakeholders; 2.I. Hinterland transportation; 2.J. Terminal management; 2.K. Performance measures and KPIs; 2.L. International Terminal Operators (ITO) in the container business.
