Soil improvement methods for foundation applications are treated as well. Learning outcomes Choice of the most suitable foundation type. Analysis and design of foundations and retaining structures. TEACHING METHODS This module uses lectures, tutorial exercises, case histories. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Deep foundations. Types and construction methods. Single pile under axial loading: bearing capacity and settlement. Loading tests. Group of piles. Single pile under horizontal loading: bearing capacity and settlement. Shafts. Shallow foundations: soil-foundation-structure interaction. Structural design of plinths, foundation beams, rafts. Earth Retaining structures: Types. At-rest, active, passive lateral earth pressure. Earth pressures due to surface loads. Earth pressure for design. Gravity retaining walls. Diaphragm walls: Cantilever and anchored retaining structures. Special Structures. Soil diplacements due to deep excavation and consequences on existing buildings. Reinforced soil as retaining walls: principles. Ground Anchors in retaining structures Soil improvment methods in foundation applications: Preloading, vertical drains and radial consolidation; soil compaction; soil stabilization; jet grouting and deep mixing RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Set of Lectures (available on AulaWeb https://dicca.aulaweb.unige.it/).
