CODE 65979 ACADEMIC YEAR 2020/2021 CREDITS 5 cfu anno 2 INGEGNERIA CIVILE 10799 (LM-23) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ICAR/09 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: STEEL CONSTRUCTION AND ADVANCED ISSUES TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course, scheduled in the second half of the accademic year, aims at introducing students to technological innovation in civil engineering, and at proposing an integrated view of structural design, taking into account both structural and non-structural performances such as resistance to fire, durability, building site management, cost efficiency, and environmental sustainability. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course addresses innovative solutions in structural design, related to both structural systems (such as mixed steel-concrete structures) and non-structural elements (such as façade and curtain panels). Moreover, it analyses special performance of structures, such as robustness, resistance to fire, durability, building site management, cost efficiency, environmental sustainability, etc…introducing students to and integrated view of structural design. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Partially restrained steel connections - ability to assess the actual stregth and stiffness of steel connections; - ability to classify steel connections according to international rules; - basic knowledge of the main modelling strategies of steel connections. Ductile design of steel structures - knwoledge of the main steel dissipative systems; - ability to design ductile moment resisting frames, as well as concentrically and eccentrically braced frames; - basic knowledge of the advanced systems for the ductil design of steel structures. Design of mixed steel-concrete structures - knowledge of the main mixed steel-concrete building systems; - knowledge of the technology and construction site and manufacturing processes of mixed steel-concrete structures; - knowledge of the structural regulation framework and methods of analysis and design of mixed steel-concrete structures; - ability to design mixed steel-concrete beams, slabs and columns. Fire design of structures - basic knowledge of the regulation framework related to fire design of buildings and structures; - knowledge of the main approaches to the fire design of structures. General - basic knowledge of the operative methods and criteria for the laboratory test on steel and mixed steel-concrete structures. TEACHING METHODS Frontal lessons Practical exercises Experimental tests in lab SYLLABUS/CONTENT Partially restrained steel connections Classifications of steel connections depending on their strenght and stiffness. Detailed and simplified approaches to the modelling of steel connections. "EC3 Component method" for the assessment of the strenght and stiffness of partially restrained steel connections. Workshop activity: strenght/stiffness evaluation of different beam-column steel connections by the component method. Experimental tests: laboratory tests on different beam-column steel connections and comparison with analytical results. Ductile design of steel structures Non linearity at material, section and structure scale. References to capacity design. Dissipative steel bracing systems. Moment resisting frames (design of columns, design of shear panels, design of beam-column connections with pre/post Northridge and pre/post Kobe approach, pre-qualification of joints). Frames with concentric bracing (non-linear axial behavior of the bracing under cyclic actions). Frames with eccentric bracing (link design). Frames with bracing with prevented instability, shear walls with solid or perforated steel sheets. Plasticization dissipation devices (U-strips dampers, torsional beam dampers,…). Friction dissipation devices. Design of mixed steel-concrete structures Historical evolution of mixed steel-concrete structures. Technological and construction site aspects. Static diagrams during assembly and during use. Regulatory framework and methods of analysis (reference standards, characteristics of materials, safety assessment, structural analysis, construction phases, rheological effects of concrete). Composite beams (plastic calculation of beams, elastic calculation of beams and verification for construction phases, stability checks, verification of connection systems with complete and partial connections, limit state tests). Composite slabs (types of slabs, calculation of corrugated sheet slabs in the casting phase and in the long term). Mixed columns (uses, construction methods, design). Design criteria (choice of the structural scheme, precautions for seismic areas, suggestions for FEM modeling, specifications of specifications for materials). Workshop activities: design of a simple mixed steel-concrete structure. Experimental tests: laboratory tests on mixed steel-concrete beams. Fire design of structures Introduction to the concept of structural robustness. Construction fire safety regulatory framework. Prescriptive and performance approach.
