AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Specific learning objectives of the module consist of providing students with practical knowledge and expertise concerning (i) conceiving and designing a prototype of an interactive system for a specific case study in the performing arts, (ii) developing the major components of such a system, (iii) testing and setting-up the system, (iv) running and supervising the system during the actual performance.

At the end of the course, students are expected to know the major issues concerning the design and the development of interactive systems for the performing arts and to be able to conceive, design, develop, set-up, run, and supervise a prototype of interactive system for a specific case study in the performing arts.

TEACHING METHODS

The module consists of (i) lectures given by the teacher focusing on the analysis of the major issues concerning the design and the development of interactive systems for the performing arts, (ii) lectures consisting of group discussions between teacher and students concerning the design of a prototype for a specific use case, (iii) lectures where students, divided into small groups, develop single components of the prototype, under the supervision of the teacher, (iv) lectures where the students run and control the prototype in a simulation of a real performance, under the supervision of the teacher.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The first part of the course will introduce the major issues concerning ideation, design, and development of interactive systems for the performing arts. Next, a concrete case study will be taken into account. A prototype of interactive system will be developed for such a specific case. Students will be actively involved in the ideation and design process. Then, divided into groups, they will develop the major components of the system. Finally, in the last part of the course, the developed prototype will be integrated, tested, and employed in the simulation of a real performance.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Slides, exercises, and further material will be made available on AulaWeb. In principle, active participation in the lectures, the notes taken during the lectures, and the material available on AulaWeb are sufficient for preparing for the final exam.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists in the assessment of the design and development activities each student performs during the course and of an interview with the teacher.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The evaluation of the design and development activities each student performs during the course will assess the capability the student has to find solutions to specific problems, discuss them, and apply them in the concrete case study the course envisages. In the interview, the teacher will assess the knowledge the student has of the topics of the course, the clarity, and the deepness of presentation.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Master theses are available concerning the topics presented in the course in areas of interest for the scientific and technological research carried out at the Casa Paganini – InfoMus research center of DIBRIS – University of Genoa (www.casapaganini.org). For students that are interested in a master thesis on these topics, the course provides the theoretical and practical knowledge, which is needed to carry out the work in the thesis.
