The course consists of a theoretical part made of lectures and exercises and a practice organized in the laboratory.
The two modules are complementary and interfacing on the various topics covered.
Objective of the course is to provide logic and methodology of approach to intervention projects at the urban scale that takes into account the current needs of the city in accordance with the feasibility and sustainability criteria.
Through a preliminary regulatory management training process, a parallel comparison with exemplary interventions in European cities and a direct application in the local area, the course aims to provide the students both the basic elements of knowledge that the correct application methods of design to urban scale.
The course is divided respectively:
-Didattica front (knowledge base of the course with reference documentation).
-Laboratory Design (development and implementation of the "project" itself, done both individually or in small groups of students on issues that, despite the different specificities are linked together by type of environmental areas or by type the issues addressed).
The basic cognitive program, as the focus legal-management discussion and analysis of operations units, the change from the previous requirement of "expansion" to that of "the existent recovery" up to new horizons and strategic development. In this regard, particular attention is paid to the changes of the nineties, through a parallel between Community initiatives, Italian experiences and some other European countries (in particular France, England, Germany) Specific attention is placed on interventions in historic centers. The introduction to the principles of environmental sustainability and the means of protection, safeguarding and enhancement of the territory aims to provide urban design elements that encourage citizens to an adequate level of quality of life. The issue of mobility is addressed, particularly as regards the relationship with the urban planning and sustainability for the consequential choices.
The "Laboratory" module constitutes, however, the application phase and consists of a design exercise on a subject agreed, refers to parts of a city having specific vocations of possible development. After a preliminary framework for network approach logical and sighted goals, students, aggregated in small groups, are led initially to the analysis of the present situation and the subsequent finding the necessary information; subsequently, in both the "laboratory" real project it is the idea that is developed, with a view at the same time functionality, compliance with environmental conditions and feasibility.

The exam is oral. The exam consists substantially of two parts:
- The first part of the presentation and discussion of project proposals developed in the framework of laboratory hours (documents required in this regard are a book A3 and a power point presentation of the project and its development).
- The second query part on the program and on personal insights developed highlighting the links between these issues with the project developed in the laboratory hours (each query is divided into: questions relating to the general program, questions about mastering subjects).
