Based on the knowledge acquired in the previous courses of Structural Design, enriched with principles of seismic design and structural modelling (FEM), the course aims at providing the methodological tools for the design of structures, tracking a path leading from the concept of the structure to its detailed design, through structural modelling and sizing of structural elements. Along this track, attention will be paid to the multidisciplinary nature of the design process, based on the integration of different issues as safety, visual perception, usability, costs, building site management, environmental impacts, maintenance operations and end-of-life disposal.
The course is addressed to two main objectives: the first one is related to deepen some topics inherent the Structural Engineering courses, the second one to face the basic principles of the seismic design.
As far as the first one concerns, the analysis and design of precast reinforced concrete structures are faced together with the use of numerical tools and software with general purpose for the structural analysis.
As far as the second one concerns, the fundamentals of structural dynamic are illustrated as contents propaedeutic to the principles of seismic design for various typological structures, like as steel, reinforced concrete and masonry buildings.
In the laboratory of the course, such contents are applied by using a software that works within the Finite Element Modelling and by analysing various example with specific reference to recommendations and rules provided by the codes currently in force in Italy (Norme Tecniche per le Costruzioni 2008).
Theory (50) + Excercise (10) + Laboratory (40)
Fundamentals of structural dynamic: Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) in elastic field, extension to nonlinear field (overdamped and inelastic spectra, use of the q factor)
Seismic action: possible intensity measures, response spectrum (elastic and for design aims)
Structural morphology: regularity principles, ductility concept.
Linear and nonlinear analysis methods for the seismic design
Seismic design for various structural types (steel, reinforced concrete and masonry buildings): structural details, capacity design rules.
