The aim of the course is to provide the student with the modeling and methodological basis for analyzing, planning and optimizing transport systems, with reference to the transport of both people and goods. In particular, the goal is to make the student able to realize models of transport demand and supply, as well as of their interaction, in order to evaluate and optimize their performances. Finally, the course aims to provide students with the theoretical and practical knowledge of the main software tools for simulation and planning of transport systems and for the solution of simple decision-making problems.
At the end of the course the student has acquired the fundamental notions of planning and management of transport systems and is able to solve simple problems to analyze and define interventions on a transport system (in particular with reference to road infrastructures). Several practical lessons allow the student to acquire skills in the use of simulation softwares and other softwares for the solution of some decision problems.
In the 2020/21 academic year, the course takes place remotely through the Microsoft Teams tool. During the lessons, the professor shows slides (which are made available to the students through Aulaweb, in general before the lesson) on the various topics of the course and, in some cases, he uses a virtual blackboard to explain in detail sono specific contents.
There will be some face-to-face meetings with the students (approximately one per month) to give them the opportunity to ask for clarifications on the program. During these meetings, which are actually part of the course, the professor is available to give explanations on the blackboard on what has been done during the remote lessons. These meetings, whose dates will be defined later and communicated during the remote lessons (and through Aulaweb), will take place in compliance with the health prevention measures dictated by the rules in force at the time of reception.
The main bibliographic reference is the book of Prof. Ennio Cascetta “Modelli per i sistemi di trasporto. Teoria e applicazioni". The reference of the English version (which is the most recent version) is:
Ricevimento: The professor receives by appointment (write an email to fix the appointment). The student consultations are carried out remotely or by appointment in presence, in compliance with the health prevention measures dictated by the rules in force at the time of reception.

In the academic year 2020/21, the course starts regularly in the week of September 21-25, 2020. Consult the final timetable for the day and time of the first lesson.
The exam consists of an oral test.
The student's assessment is carried out through an oral test in which the student is asked to illustrate (on the blackboard) the theoretical topics of the course and to solve (on the blackboard) some exercises. The student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired a sufficient knowledge of the topics illustrated in class and that he/she is able to solve simple problems of planning and managing transport systems.
In order to correctly define the sequence of oral exams, it is mandatory to register for the exam at least 2 days in advance.
