OVERVIEW

The course is part of the New Childhood Sociology approach. The goal is to provide the cognitive tools of this field of study, with particular attention to the gender perspective. The fundamental concept of Interpretative Reproduction will be treated through the key concepts of Generation - Agentivity, Control and Culture of children. The expected objective is to develop adequate methodological skills to promote the agency of boys and girls in educational contexts

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The so-called New Childhood Sociology therefore confutes socialisation as a central category in considering the relationships between adults and children, and replaces it with that of generation, which ensures a better comprehension of power relationships and processes in the transmission of culture. From this point of view, childhood is defined as a permanent but changing structure, in which the children passing through are real social actors. Related concepts are illustrated and some implications in research are discussed.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Understand some of the core ways in which psychological and sociological approaches to children and childhood differ. 2. Understand the contribution of socialisation theory to the sociology of childhood and the criticisms the concept generated. 3. Describe and illustrate the  ‘new paradigm for the sociology of childhood’. 4. Demonstrate awareness of the criticisms of the ‘newness’ of the ‘new’ sociology of childhood.
