«The levels of linguistic analysis: history, theory, and practice».
The course moves from a reflection on the levels of linguistic analysis, particularly addressing semantics, lexicology, and pragmatics. Therefore, a history of the evolution of the notion of linguistic analysis will be presented, as well as a reflection of the concept of "meaning". An analysis will be carried out of materials from fundamental works of linguistic science, so as to provide a solid theoretical basis. Thereafter, a series of variegated textual specimina will be examined and commented upon during the course, keeping as a final perspective the application of pragmatic principles.
The course aims to provide students with a solid theoretical basis that will allow them to read a vast array of texts knowing how to apply, from time to time, the different levels of linguistic analysis. The especial objective is to make the student aware that linguistics is a fundamental and foundational part of humanities, and that knowing how to apply the principles of linguistic analysis in a correct manner amounts to knowing how to read and interpret a text - or an utterance - in order to relate it to the other, most variegated fields of knowledge. At the conclusion of the course, the student is supposed to have become aware of the importance of linguistic analysis and its levels, appreciating its multifaceted character and being able to apply its theoretical notions, especially at a pragmatic level.
Basic knowledge of notions related to general linguistics is required.
All students are required to sign up to Aulaweb.
