OVERVIEW

What are the regularities and conventions that structure a language? How do you determine if a form or a construct is correct? What role do prescriptive rules, the everyday, and literary usage play? Grammar is the complex of notions and mechanisms that makes a language a shared and functioning system. In the case of ancient Greek and Latin it also has the non-secondary merit of giving access to a literary production of unreachable beauty, which is at the base of our civilization.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching aims to provide students with knowledge related to morphology, parts of speech and constructs of ancient Greek and Latin, also in the light of language theories and of both descriptive and normative approaches of the ancient and late ancient grammatical tradition.

Participation in the activities and / or individual study will allow the student to:

– know and understand the morphology of ancient Greek and Latin;

– know and understand the syntax of ancient Greek and Latin;

– know and understand the main features of the reflection by the ancients on their own languages;

– ability of reflection on similarities and differences between the ancient analysis model and the modern one;

– acquire the appropriate technical language.

– apply the knowledge on language reflection by the ancients to the reading in the original language of ancient habdbooks.

PREREQUISITES

Command of ancient Greek and Latin.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures and guided practice exercises (group works will be in case organized, according to the number of participants).

The lessons will be held in presence (seat reservation is compulsory, due to the limitations on the capacity of the classrooms in relation to the Covid pandemic: see https://cedia.unige.it/sites/ cedia.unige.it/files/pagine/Prenotazione%20del%20posto%20in%20aula%20-20Guida%20allo%20studente_UNIGE.pdf; it is necessary to have a "Green Pass"). It is recommended, when possible, to attend lessons in presence. Students who are unable to attend lessons in presence can attend via videoconference on Teams (access code: ujrcl8r).

Non-attending students are requested to contact the teacher to receive supplementary bibliography. Students who will not attend lessons live (even if via videoconference), but will only hear the recordings, will be considered non-attending students. All the students are requested to register on the Aulaweb page of the teaching, where timely communications will also be given if changes to the teaching methods should become necessary.

– in-depht analysis of characteristic and problematic issues of ancient Greek and Latin;

– the idea, origins and constitutive parts of the techne grammatike in the Greek world and the ars grammatica in the Latin world;

– the theory of the parts of speech and Hellenismos/Latinitas;

– analogy and anomaly: readings from Varro, De lingua latina, books 8-10.

– in-depht analysis of characteristic and problematic issues of ancient Greek and Latin;

– the idea, origins and constitutive parts of the techne grammatike in the Greek world and the ars grammatica in the Latin world;

– the theory of the parts of speech and Hellenismos/Latinitas;

– analogy and anomaly: readings from Varro, De lingua latina, books 8-10;

– reading in the original language of the Techne grammatike attributed to Dionysius Thrax.

The test is an interview aimed at assessing: 1) knowledge and understanding of the mechanisms of morphology and syntax of ancient Greek and Latin; 2) knowledge and understanding of the main features and of the mechanism of the reflection by the ancients on their own languages; 3) ability of reflection on similarities and differences between the ancient analysis model and the modern one; 4) ability of use of the appropriate technical language.

‘Pass’ requirements are: to know the information relating to morphology and syntax of ancient Greek and Latin; to have basically understood the main conceptual turning points and the crucial problems of the reflection of the ancients on their own languages; to be able to grasp the differences between the ancient analysis model and the modern one; to express with the appropriate technical vocabulary.
‘Excellence’ requirements are: a total mastery of the phenomena related to morphology and syntax of ancient Greek and Latin; to have thoroughly understood the conceptual turning points and the problems of the reflection of the ancients on their own languages; to be able to reflect independently on the differences between the ancient analysis model and the modern one; to argue with the appropriate technical vocabulary.

‘Excellence’ requirements are: a total mastery of the phenomena related to morphology and syntax of ancient Greek and Latin; to have thoroughly understood the conceptual turning points and the problems of the reflection of the ancients on their own languages; to be able to reflect independently on the differences between the ancient analysis model and the modern one; to argue with the appropriate technical vocabulary; to read in the original language the passages of ancient handbooks dealt with in class and to reflect on their contents, problematizing them.
