OVERVIEW

The course intends to examine the History of Pedagogy, Education and School, presenting its scientific assets and knowledge paradigms.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main course objective is providing specific knowledge and analytical tools to understand how the history of education and educational institutions are inherently connected to civil life. The course also aims methodological tools on finding sources and construing educational models.

The main objectives of the course consist in understanding and acquiring knowledge regarding the history of pedagogy, education and school, considering the meanings assumed within the historical horizon by the problems associated with self-formation, education and cultural instruction of the human being, together with the identity of the school, understood as a pedagogical environment.

TEACHING METHODS

Due to the health situation associated with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and according to rectoral regulations issued by the University of Genoa, and the guidelines established by DISFOR, lectures can be conducted in two different ways.

A) If it is possible to hold lectures in attendance.
Lessons will be conducted in the presence of the teacher and will have mainly character of lectures. Within the course, group activities and seminars can be provided.

B) If distance teaching is extended.
Lectures will be hold on Microsoft Teams platform, normally through an interactive modality, at institutionally scheduled time. They will include both frontal teaching moments and forms of debate and discussion on the contents of the lecture.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will mainly deal with the following contents: the categories of research and the objects of study in the history of pedagogy, education and school; methodological elements and cognitive paradigms of historiographic research in the context of the history of pedagogy; the scientific-problematic connection between history and pedagogy, considered in relation to the problems of self-formation, education and cultural instruction.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Exam is written. The written exam is finalized to verify acquired knowledge by the Students and their critical capabilities in the elaboration of the learned contents.

Evaluation criteria: relevance of contents, argumentation of acquired knowledge, logical coherence, language properties, critical-problematic ability.

EXAM OF THE SUMMER SESSION (MAY – SEPTEMBER 2022)

According to rectoral regulations issued by the University of Genoa (D.R. 1838 of 2 May 2022), and the and following the Communication sent by the Director of the Department of Sciences of Self-formation (sent on 29 April 2022), since next summer session the exams of "Storia della Pedagogia, dell’Educazione e della Scuola” will be held in the presence, on the exam dates provided and reported both in the Course form and on the AulaWeb page of the Course. The methods of conducting the exam are detailed below.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Based on the indications provided by the University and the Department, the exams will be done in two different and eventually ways.

A) If it is possible to take exams in attendance.
The exam, which last 60 minutes, is structured into a short number of open questions. During the time of the exam, Students can consult texts in the program. Students have to take the exam with the program of the current academic year, even if they are enrolled in previous academic years.
If the exam is “not passed”, Students will have to take the exam again in the same manner.
For non-attending Students, the exam procedures are the same.

B) If distance teaching is extended.
Students will have to draw up a short paper (read editorial criteria indicated below) in which tehy will have to put together contents learned from studied books and attended lectures with a theme that will be indicated for each exam session, developing a critical-problematic reflection (which has to be the risult of their own elaboration). Students will have to draw a short final bibliography, including studied texts and 5 other volumes which their consider essential for the topic discussion.
Bibliography must indicate Surname and Name of the Author of the volume, Title of the volume, Publisher, City, year of publication.
Drafting criteria of the essay: the required format extension of the exam must be between a minimum of 2 pages and a maximum of 3 pages, for a total of characters between 4,000 and 6,000, spaces included.

For international Students, texts and articles in English are available on request. The exam can be taken in English in the prescribed manner.
