OVERVIEW

For an edition of a poetic anthology by Joao Vario: translation, historical and cultural context (Cape Verdean literature)

 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching content will be geared towards refining translation techniques and consolidating expressive skills, as well as deepening lexicography and specialist terminology.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

1 translation theory, translation from Portuguese, Cape Verdean variants and their origin, the poetry of Joao Vario

2 In-depth knowledge of the history of the Portuguese language between the 16th and 17th centuries in relation to the social and linguistic dynamics connected with the diversification between standard Portuguese and the Brazilian variant, and thus with the concept of linguistic norm. Analysis of original texts of the period considered with attention to linguistic constants in a diachronic perspective.

TEACHING METHODS

The (frontal) lessons are held in Italian.

The LECTURE part will be held by Dr Dulce Correia (and will be annual); the THEORETICAL MODULE part will be held by Prof Roberto Francavilla in the second semester.

The course also includes seminars and conferences held by professors from other universities and the presentation of books with the participation of writers and translators.

Attendance is not compulsory and is not monitored, but it is strongly recommended.

Should the covid emergency continue into the second semester, lessons will be online.

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

 

The course includes a theoretical part on translanguaging studies and a second, practical part in which there will be a collective translation of a selection of poems by Cape Verdean author Joao Vario.

Further critical materials will be provided by the lecturer during the course of the lectures.

The bibliography is indicative and will be discussed with the lecturer during the course of the module. Non-attending students are asked to contact the lecturer to agree on a bibliography.
